Not me thankfully, or not yet anyway. 25 got sick. It's notable because it's the first "really sick/injured" of our relationship. We've both had colds, but real sick is different. Anything that requires a trip to the urgent care is different.
While I'm not happy he got bronchitis, it is a useful measuring stick. Like I said, it's a milestone. It's great that it didn't happen when we'd only been dating a couple months. That could have ended things. In my experience, women and very specifically me, tend to want to care for, even mother, a man. I like to be helpful, offer assistance. I've learned over the years, through trial and lots of errors plus a little reading (Why men date bitches and the like) you can't do that too soon. When dating a man, you have to increase those sorts of "taking care of my man" sorts of things slowly, veeerrrrryyyyy sssssssssssssslllllllllllllooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwlllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyy. If you come on too fast/too much, they are like deer - they panic and flee. I can't speak for most women, but I often find that difficult. I want to help. I have had to very deiliberately scale those efforts back to basics.
25 is like any man. When he gets the flu is quickly turns in to manflu. He had that a couple months ago, maybe January. He had the sniffles, he wanted sympathy. He got a bit and no offers of soup, drugstore runs, etc. This time, with months behind us, it was different.
We both had minor cold symptoms Sunday a couple weeks ago. I was congested, he had a sore throat. We didn't really think anything of it. My stuffy nose and sneezing lasted about four days. 25 was exposed to bronchitis at work and several other co-workers that were sick or had sick partners. He called in stick to work Wednesday and Thursday. I took him soup on Wednesday night, hung out for a couple hours then went home because I had to get my beauty sleep for early work the next day.
Against my suggestion, he went to work Friday and was, let's say, less than productive. Over the weekend he stayed at my place, mostly sleeping. He was burning up and had a very persistent cough, though none of the other more cold-like symptoms that I'd had. By Sunday morning he had decided that a trip to the urgent care clinic was warranted, and so it was. Acute bronchitis meant an injection and prescriptions.
The milestone part to all of this is that he let me take care of him. He said more than once that he'd be/have been a lot worse off without me. He thanked me for being there, for having him at the house and making sure he had gatorade and soup. He seemed to notice that having me in his life for a long time would be a really good thing, beneficial on multiple fronts.
A semi-concise recollection of the whole truth of my doings, goings, meetings and happenings as a wandering American teacher who spent time in foreign lands and has since returned to the even more foreign land of Uncle Sam. Accuracy is subject to my opinion and preference, as well as the weather, alignment of the moon, state of intoxication and fifteen other factors that you wouldn't believe or agree with.

Back amongst the living
I have survived the worst of it now I figure. Of course, knowing me, now that I've said that I'll end up hospitalized with Dengue or The Plague. Here's a condensed rendition of the events of the past two-plus weeks of Melissa health news.
I'd been sick for about six or seven weeks with nondescript digestive issues. I eventually went to the doctor and was told I had a bacterial infection in my intestines. Pills and patience was the prescription and I seems to be on the mend.
I went to Singapore (blog to follow about that) for 6 days. I arrived Friday and really enjoyed myself until Monday afternoon. Prior to Monday I did have a few little digestive "hiccups" which I attributed to too much curry or the change from Indonesian food. By Monday afternoon I was in a fair amount of pain and I limped back to my hostel. I didn't sleep more than an hour Monday night as I was in agony. I believe that I have a high pain tolerance. I may whine but I'll trek on through most things. This pain absolutely felled me. It felt like I was being stabbed on either side of my belly button. It was sharp and radiated back to my spine. By the wee hours of Tuesday morning I'd set a deadline: If I didn't feel at least marginally better by 7 am I would go to the hospital. I gave in at 6:15 and caught a cab.
When I got to Singapore General Hospital I was nearly in tears. I couldn't breath deeply or stand up straight. I was flashing back to my father's bouts with pancreatitis which were the only times in his life I'd seen him in tears. I thought it must be that, or my appendix, or something else equally serious for me to be in that much pain. I was sent to registration, then triage, and then to the waiting room. I probably was there only twenty minutes or so before I was seen but if felt like two days. Once I was called, a tiny nurse, no more than a third my size, insisted on taking my arm to assist me as I was hunching over and moving the speed of an injured snail.
The doctor was a tall, big boned Asian looking man who's face I never saw from behind his mask. He asked a few perfunctory questions, listed to my heart, felt my abdomen and drew blood. I'd submitted for a urinalysis upon entry. The put an IV in my hand and ran what would eventually be two liters. Then off to x-ray. The tech there helped be undress, and by this I mean she physically man-handled me to undress me as I was more of less incapable. I took out my bellybutton ring and lost it at some point before I left. The two x-rays were torture as it hurt to stretch out and lie flat.
Back to the observation room until the labs were back. I did nod off there for a couple hours. Id been there about three hours when the nurse woke me to say it was a bladder infection. I was a bit dazed and not able to understand how that was but didn't ask many questions. The IV was removed, and I was sent "home". All in all the trip was much more affordable than I feared. The visit which in The States would have run into the hundreds easily, cost me 95.55 SGD ($78, or 52 Euros). That included all the diagnostics and prescriptions.
It was then Tuesday and I was determined not to miss out on the last of my holiday so out I went to meet Alysson for lunch. I continued to feel really bad until I threw up in the restaurant toilet and it was about that time I started to seriously doubt it was a bladder infection. I took the medications for two days without much change or relief.
I arrived back to Jakarta Wednesday night and pledged to go to the doctor again on Thursday. Returning to the doctor (Dr. Melissa) that I'd seen before, I still had some of the bacteria around from before but now also had a massive yeast infection in my intestines. WHAT? I thought that was a lady parts problem. Apparently not, one can get a yeast infection in the kidneys, stomach, mouth and throat additionally. It's been a long, sloooooow road to feeling (mostly) well again. That road contained four medications (one an anti-fungal which sounds revolting), two weeks without carbohydrates and sugars, and several backsliding moments of increased pain. Today is my last day in carb banishment but I've just found out it needs to be another three weeks sugar free. SIGH! I do feel much better aside from the nasty cough I picked up yesterday morning so I'll carry on sugar free. My friend Julia swears I've lost some weight, if I haven't I'll be pissed. At least I can answer the call of the Bintang beer that's been whispering my name for over a week.
Everyone seems surprised that Singapore totally muffed the diagnosis and Jakarta got it right. I think the docs here are more accustomed to dealing with dodgy stomachs but who knows. Until I really real 100% I'll be taking any good juju or positive thoughts you can send my way.

icky icky sicky
Hello all and once again I begin with an apology. My plan was to return from Singapore tan and rested, resuming my life and my blog post haste. Oh riiiight, life is what happens when we're busy making plans. Instead I ended up visiting the emergency room at Singapore General Hospital to be misdiagnosed, then seeing the doctor again after my return to Jakarta for what appears to be a more correct diagnosis. On that note I've been in agony for over a week now. I am also having technical difficulties with internet, both at home and at work. And although I should take advantage of the internet now, I've reverted to a five year old in the last week and napped every day (well, Tuesday I just went to bed early and slept twelve hours but I'm still counting it). Today shall be no exception. I will keep it painfully brief and do my best to get a blog in the bag tomorrow at work when I'm feeling better (I hope).
Notes to follow will be on the highs and lows of my first real tourist trip to Singapore, meaning I was there more than eight hours, a cliffs notes version of my recent maladies and update about work's chaotic schedule.
Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Updates related to recent blogs
The white diet seems to be working. My stomach is finally settling down and I tried some pasta with tomatoes last night. Keep your fingers crossed that the worst is behind me. If it goes back to being really painful I think I'll finally give in and see a doctor. There are too many parasites, amoebas, worms, etc that can easily be picked up in Indonesia to ignore it much longer.
I saw three other white, foreigners on busway this week. None of them were on my bus, but the were on the gangways that are required to get on a bus. I think we stared at each other with an equal level of disbelief. It wasn't quite as severe as the astonished stare I have when I hit the Seattle Airport and I am no longer in Asia, surrounded by Asians. A second note about busway; No one thought I was pregnant on the bus this week. I was able to get a seat last night simple because it was after rush hour and I was going opposite the tide.
I think I might maybe possibly be rising on the next wave. After spending the better part of the last month or so withdrawn from friends and social life, I feel the shadows lifting and the urge to begin to muster the energy to go out. As that sentence implies, I'm not there yet, but looking at the distinct possibility.
I'm wrenching myself away from the Japan coverage. As tragic as it is, I don't think watching the minute by minute feed on BBC.com is healthy for anyone after a week. I did find this site that is the best thing going. Livingsocial.com is a site like groupon, they offer discount vouchers for restaurants and services. Today they are offering a $5 donation to the Red Cross to help those affected in Japan. The kicker is that they will match your five bucks with another five smackers for a total donation of ten United States greenbacks. I don't care how broke you are, if you have a computer and can read this blog, you are in a position to give five samolians. That's less than two lattes at Starbucks!
Instead of Japan, I shake my head in amazement that people are paying of 65,000 British Pounds for a dress worn in 2002 by Kate Middleton, that all Prince William can do is offer condolence in New Zealand and Japan. No actual, quantifiable help. Sure, the UK has send aid and rescue teams but wouldn't Diana have done more than say "oh, so sad, so sorry"? I am shaking my head in worry about the newly minted no fly zone over Libya and hoping that it won't plunge the world into another decade long Middle East conflict which costs numerous lives and countless dollars.
My final shake of the head is from a forwarded email of Walmartians. I'll let the photo speak for itself.

Hibernation
It's not exactly, not even hardly wintery today, but it is dark and the rain is looming. I feel like hibernating not just because spring never really springs here but because I'm tired. I wanted to blog today but couldn't come up with something on my usual fantastic witty level so I'll write a quick note about my least favorite but more present topic lately, my health.
My stomach is feeling a bit better today after going two days eating no veggies, only bananas for fruit, rice, bread, oatmeal and little probiotic yogurts. I'm dying for some fried rice though I haven't for weeks. It's always when you can't have it that it sounds good. I've successfully fended headaches off the last two days. I am still very tentative after the three successive days of migraines a week ago. I'm also feeling achy lately, just the last two or three days really. Whether all of this is related or not I don't know, but it all adds up to making me feel lousy.
I am also feeling mentally and emotionally drained lately. There have been a couple weekend nights out that turned sour and has put me off going out, at least to that particular club. It seems to take more and more energy to get ready and get out only to have the night flop or worse, that I don't want to rationalize it. If I'm going to go out, I'd rather it be a good friend or two for dinner and a cocktail.
Mixed signals, irritating circumstances or pending business surrounding a couple people in my life is also contributing to my recent sentiments. There's a lot of my mind regarding things that I can't change or sort or deal with right now, not because I don't want to but because I can't yet. They are things I can't expel from my brain and hence then sit and suck up the last drops of energy and initiative. I'm also starting to think about next year (already??) for work, where to live, etc, etc. It's making me antsy to go but I know it's not time. Well, that and the fact that I know everything could change between now and then.
I wish I could just . . .
On the upside, I am encouraged to keep writing, even if it's short, by the number of blog views I've had lately. Thanks for stickin' around long enough for me to get back in the groove after the holidays.
